RealNetworks Founder Glaser Becomes a VC at Accel–The Venture Firm That Backed Him 15 Years Ago

Rob Glaser, the founder of RealNetworks, is joining Accel Partners as a part-time venture partner.

Ironically, it was Accel that first funded the digital media pioneer, leading a critical $5.7 million round for RealNetworks (RNWK) in 1995.

Glaser said in an interview with BoomTown this afternoon that he will focus on digital media, as well as social and mobile start-ups, especially in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest area where he lives and where he founded RealNetworks.

As for becoming a VC after years of being an entrepreneur, Glaser (pictured here) said he was looking forward to being on the other side, especially at Silicon Valley-based Accel.

“I have never seen a more entrepreneurially-aligned venture firm,” he said. “And it is a really exciting time to be investing in a firm with that kind of high-density intelligence.”

The rest of Glaser’s time will be devoted to his board duties, as well as other political and charitable pursuits, including focusing on new baby: 10-day-old son, Max.

Glaser stepped down as longtime CEO of RealNetworks earlier this year, but has remained its chairman and owns more than one-third of its shares.

Although the company has struggled in recent years, RealNetworks has been a genuine and innovative pioneer in Web audio and video software and an early player in Web music services, although not everyone was a fan of the technology, because of its aggressive deployment.

The company was originally called Progressive Networks after Glaser’s political bent.

There have been several well-known entrepreneurs who have turned into VCs–most recently, Netscape Communications founder Marc Andreessen, who started a firm.

Conan O’Brien’s Angry YouTube Rant

YouTube is celebrating its fifth birthday by announcing that it is now generating a staggering two billion views per day. Context: In October, Google’s (GOOG) video site announced it had crossed the one billion views per day mark.

That’s a lot of videos! As usual, no word on financials, profitability, etc. But there is plenty of congratulatory back-slapping here and here.

Best part, by far: A brief anniversary message from Conan O’Brien, in which the comedian connects YouTube’s rise with America’s decline: “Nobody actually makes anything anymore. We’re all watching monkeys in propeller hats flush themselves down a toilet. And that’s why India is kicking our ass. And China, and pretty much everyone else. Switzerland, kicking our ass. Guam, way ahead of us.”

And he effectively sums up Web economics, or lack thereof:
“That’s not the point of the internet. It’s not to make money. It’s for someone you’ve never met, who’s a nerd, in Palo Alto, to make money.”

Facebook to Address Employees’ Anxiety about Privacy

Facebook Inc. executives will field questions from employees anxious about the privacy implications of a pair of features for spreading its services across the Web that prompted a public outcry.

Facebook chief exectuive Mark Zuckerberg is planning to attend the meeting, scheduled for 4 p.m. West Coast time, according to a person familiar with the matter.

This person said the company isn’t planning to announce any changes to the features at the meeting and that no modifications to its product or policies were “imminent.”

“We have an open culture and it should come as no surprise that we’re providing a forum for employees to ask questions on a topic that has received a lot of outside interest,” a Facebook spokesman said in a statement.

The meeting was arranged as executives have been debating internally how to respond to calls from privacy advocates, legislators and users for the company to rethink the two features the company launched in recent weeks.

Both are designed to spread Facebook’s features across the broader Web. But they have irked some some users and critics who argue that they go beyond how users expect Facebook to use their data.

One is a button that publishers can install to allow people to more easily share content with their friends on Facebook. When Facebook users click on the buttons, called Like buttons, the interaction is public, meaning other users could see that they endorsed an article or like a band.

Of greater concern to many users and privacy advocates, some of which have lodged a complaint to the FTC, is a test Facebook is conducting with a handful of sites that allows the site to instantly recognize when a Facebook user arrives and personalize the site with content from their Facebook friends. Mr. Zuckerberg has cheered such “instant personalization” as the future of Facebook and the Web. But users have hailed it as creepy.

H-P: Why Our Ink Is Expensive

Tired of hearing customers whine that printer ink is too expensive–and facing competition from ink-cartridge refillers–executives at Hewlett-Packard’s printing division would like to buff up the print giant’s reputation with consumers. So the company recently sent Thom Brown, who specializes in “competitive media intelligence,” on a media tour with a presentation called “Why Does Ink Cost So Much?”

Opening a bag of props including a trio of shot glasses, squares of foam and some disassembled print heads, Mr. Brown earlier this week explained the complex workings of H-P print heads, and the billions of dollars the company has spent over the years developing them.

He talked about the challenges in shooting drops of ink at moving pages of paper, and the perils of refilling ink cartridges rather than buying new ones from H-P. Refilling involves poking a hole in an H-P cartridge and filling it with a god-knows-what mixture of non-H-P ink–a process that can lead to smudging and other poor performance, Mr. Brown said. H-P, he added, has heard from plenty of customers who tried refilling. “A lot of them don’t have good experiences,” he said.

In addition to research-and-development, the expense of ink cartridges comes from H-P’s high-tech testing of cartridges that break. The company uses electron microscopes, Mr. Brown said, to figure out what made a printhead malfunction. H-P has started what it calls an “Ink Amnesty Program” to bring back customers who have left H-P for refillers. In exchange for sharing your bad-ink story, the program will give consumers a 20% discount coupon for H-P ink.

Of course it’s not just R&D that makes H-P’s ink costs so much. With more than 40% of the worldwide printer market last year, according to research firm IDC, H-P doesn’t face serious competitive pressure that would force it to drop prices.

Mr. Brown said his area of knowledge is printing technology, not profits.

But in the company’s last quarterly earnings report, H-P’s printing division booked more than $6 billion in sales and more than $1 billion in operating profit. Its operating profit margin was 17%, but Shaw Wu, an analyst with Kaufman Brothers, said that includes sales of low-profit printers. On ink alone, he estimates that H-P’s margin is somewhere between 20% and 30%.

Alcatel-Lucent's Net Loss Widens

Telecommunications-equipment maker Alcatel-Lucent SA posted a net loss in the first quarter, saying Thursday that a shortage of electronic components meant it couldn't fulfill some orders.

The Paris-based company, which has recorded a quarterly profit only twice since its creation in 2006, said its net loss widened to €515 million ($660.3 million) in the three months ended March 31, compared with a loss of €402 million a year earlier.

Washington Post Announces a One-Time Fire Sale for Newsweek

This is how bad things are at Newsweek: Not only has owner Washington Post Co. (WPO) hired Allen & Company to sell the magazine, but it’s not pretending otherwise.

From the release:

“The losses at Newsweek in 2007-2009 are a matter of record. Despite heroic efforts on the part of Newsweek’s management and staff, we expect it to still lose money in 2010. We are exploring all options to fix that problem,” said Donald E. Graham, chairman of The Washington Post Company. “Newsweek is a lively, important magazine and website, and in the current climate, it might be a better fit elsewhere.”

In corporatespeak, this is equivalent to hastily scrawling out a “Going Out of Business–Name Your Price” sign and plastering it on the front window.
