A Verizon iPhone in January? I’ll Believe It When I See It.

If Verizon iPhone stories are a dime a dozen, here’s 0.833333 cents’ worth.

“Two people familiar with the plans” tell Bloomberg that Verizon (VZ) will begin peddling the Apple (AAPL) phone in January, after the exclusivity deal with AT&T (T) expires. No details beyond that, though a research note this morning from Barclays (BCS) says we might expect an announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show.

“Our component and distribution checks indicate that Apple is likely to begin production of a CDMA iPhone, possibly with LTE support, in 4Q10 for launch at Verizon in January 2011, perhaps at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES),” analyst Ben Reitzes wrote. “We believe Apple’s U.S. unit volume is likely to grow from 11 million units in 2010 to at least 15 million in 2011 as a result, with 9 million at Verizon and 6 million at AT&T. We also believe Apple may launch the device in other CDMA markets, in particular China with China Telecom.”

Whatever. As I’ve said before, at this point I’d be happy to see the iPhone added to Verizon’s lineup, if only to put an end to these seemingly endless rumors.

IPhone 4: $188 in Parts, $411 in Magic

The components in the 16GB version of Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 4 cost $8.55 more than those in its predecessor.

This according to iSuppli’s tear-down analysis of the device, which estimates its bill of materials to be $187.51 (click on chart below to enlarge). That’s a bit more that the iPhone 3GS, which had a BOM of $178.96, but then, Apple’s newest iPhone model boasts a number of enhancements, among them the Retina Display and A4 processor, which iSuppli figures cost $28.50 and $10.75, respectively.

No word on what carriers pay Apple for the device. But right now a 16GB iPhone 4 on AT&T (T) without contract or subsidy costs $599.

What Viacom’s Loss to YouTube Means for Hollywood

The Google geeks have beaten Hollywood chic. But how much will the court ruling against Viacom (VIA) in its $1 billion copyright battle over YouTube tip the balance of power from professional content creators to online distributors?

In ruling on summary judgment that the Google (GOOG)-owned video-sharing site is protected from liability by a safe-harbor provision in copyright law, U.S. District Court Judge Louis Stanton has sent a clear message:

When user-generated video sites implement reasonable takedown procedures, they are shielded from infringement lawsuits based on the copyrighted content that users upload.

The Voyage of the CGI

Is there any Hollywood movie coming out anymore that is not chock full of computer-generated imagery?

Apparently not, from the look of this new trailer for the latest film based on the series of classic books by C.S. Lewis, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.”

It’s due at Christmas and seems packed full–even in this short clip–with more techie eye candy than usual, including a painting of the sea on the wall that floods a room.

May The Force–And Safety Goggles–Be With You

Since Luke Skywalker first picked up a light saber in 1977, we’ve dreamed of wielding the laser sword made famous in the “Star Wars” movies–“an elegant weapon for a more civilized age.” And while the technology isn’t quite there yet, we’re getting closer.

For around $200, Shanghai-based WickedLasers.com will ship you its latest laser device, known as the Spyder III Pro Arctic and looking suspiciously like the beloved science-fiction weapon. Using a blue-laser diode taken from a powerful film projector, the Spyder III emits a 445-nanometer wavelength beam of up to one watt in power. Or, as the WickedLasers site explains:

“Don’t let the Arctic name fool you, this laser possesses the most burning capabilities of any portable laser in existence. That’s why it’s also the most dangerous laser ever created.”

With Father’s Day right around the corner, the “most dangerous laser ever created” may sound like the perfect gift for the supervillain who has everything (though more powerful lasers exist for industrial and research purposes). But remember that every young Jedi must endure an exhaustive training montage sequence before going to town on his enemies with a light saber.

100 Million iPhone Owners by End of 2011? Maybe Once the Pre-Order Issues Are Sorted Out.

Apple will more than triple iPhone ownership in the next year and a half, giving it an installed base of 100 million people by the end of 2011. This according to Morgan Stanley (MS) analyst Katy Huberty, who theorizes that more than half of all current iPhone owners plan to upgrade to the iPhone 4.

Adding new purchases to that, Huberty figures Apple (AAPL) will sell at least 42 million iPhones in calendar year 2010, assuming a 30 percent upgrade rate for existing customers. If the rate hits 50 percent, sales will grow to 48 million. In 2011, Huberty expects another 19 million upgrades.

Result: “We see the iPhone installed base rising from approximately 30M subscribers at the end of 2009 to over 100M by the end of 2011,” says Huberty. “We believe there are several key drivers of iPhone upgrades including: 1) Redesigned hardware with many new important features, 2) ‘Stickiness’ of the installed base due to App store and iTunes, 3) 57% of U.S. installed base is not fully upgradeable to iOS4 (i.e. no multitasking), 4) Early upgrade incentives from AT&T and 5) Maturation of the installed base. We would also point to AT&T’s introduction of tiered data pricing (that potentially reduces iPhone total cost of ownership by 20%+) as a possible driver of the strong initial pre-order activity.”

Adobe: Flash on 53 Percent of All Smartphones Shipping in 2012

Apple CEO Steve Jobs says Adobe’s Flash platform, like floppy disks and serial ports before it, is a technology that has outlived its usefulness. But according to Adobe, Flash has some legs yet.

In an interview with Reuters, Anup Murarka, director of technical marketing for mobile and devices at Adobe (ADBE), claims 53 percent of all smartphones shipping in 2012 will support Flash, Jobs and his Thoughts on Flash polemic be damned.

For comparison, industry analysts expect 200 million smartphones to ship this year, 10 percent of them Flash-capable. In 2012, smartphone sales are expect to hit 300 million, and if Adobe does manage to get a respectable version of Flash on more than half of them, it will indeed have something to crow about.

“You’re going to see Flash not only on [Google's] Android. Consumers will see devices from Palm (PALM), Research in Motion Ltd’s (RIMM) Blackberry, Nokia’s (NOK) Symbian and Microsoft (MSFT) Windows Phone 7 support the full Flash Player,” Murarka said. “Maybe we don’t get to the iPhone or iPad. If anything, we’re seeing continued growth in the install base and the usage of Flash and we see that continuing to grow.”

But that’s today, when HTML5 is still a nascent standard. With its adoption being hastened aggressively by Apple (AAPL), the situation could be very different in two years.

This new version of Word is used inside a Web browser. It works on both Windows PCs and Macs, and via the newer versions of the major browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Chrome. It’s free and it doesn’t require you to have regular Office on your computer.

Word isn’t the only Office component that’s now available in a free online version. Microsoft (MSFT) has created similar simplified versions of Excel, PowerPoint and its OneNote note-taking program as part of the free online suite called Office Web Apps, which is available at office.live.com. To use the new online Office, you’ll need a free account for the company’s broader Windows Live online service.

Microsoft is also releasing a new version of its traditional desktop Office for Windows next week, called Office 2010. But in my view, the online edition is the most interesting new development for consumers in this round of updates. It’s part of the broader trend toward cloud computing—doing tasks online rather than with desktop programs. And it’s meant to help the software giant compete with rival online office suites from competitors like Google (GOOG) and Zoho.

I’ve been testing Office Web Apps on both Windows and Mac computers, and in all four major browsers, and I like it. It has some downsides and is still a work in progress. It lacks many of the more sophisticated features of the local, desktop version of Office. In fact, Microsoft—apparently trying to protect its profitable desktop suite—refers to Office Web Apps as a “companion” to desktop Office, for “light” work.

The Office Web Apps version of Word is used inside a Web browser.

But these are capable, if simpler, programs that look and feel like their desktop counterparts and they will likely meet the needs of many consumers who produce basic documents, even if they don’t own desktop Office. Also, the new Web Apps are connected to a generous 25 gigabytes of free online storage for your documents, via a companion Microsoft online storage system called SkyDrive.

Another big benefit: Microsoft boasts its Office Web Apps produce documents that use the same file formats as the desktop programs and thus, look fully accurate when opened in desktop Office. The company calls this “fidelity.” In my tests, this claim held true, at least on my Windows PC. (A revised version of Microsoft Office for the Mac, tuned to work with Web Apps, is in the works.)

The new version of the desktop Office suite also has many new features, but a lot of these are for power users or corporate users, and, overall, it isn’t nearly as big a change as its predecessor, Office 2007. Among the new desktop features consumers will notice and use are the extension of the consolidated top tool bar called the “Ribbon,” introduced in the 2007 version in most Office programs, to Outlook; a new unified view for printing, sharing and previewing documents, called “Backstage”; and richer graphics. You can also now customize the Ribbon.

Is Page-View Journalism Really a Problem?

There have been complaints now and again about this concept of “page view journalism–the idea that in this digital era, reporters will only take on stories that will drive lots of page views. Tom Foremski and Sam Whitmore–two media watchers who I know and respect a lot–recently discussed this issue, worrying that important stories don’t get told because of this.

Exclusive: Google Buys Invite Media

Google has indeed bought ad technology start-up Invite Media, I’ve confirmed with multiple sources.

As I wrote last month, Invite is a three-year-old “demand-side platform” designed to help buyers navigate high-volume display-advertising exchanges–like the one Google launched last year.

I don’t have a price for the deal nailed down, but I believe it’s in the $70 million range. Google (GOOG) declined to comment; I haven’t heard back from Invite Media CEO Nat Turner.

People familiar with the transaction say Google’s plan is to leave Invite running as a standalone unit, which will work at arm’s length with exchange’s like Google’s AdX, as well as competitors like OpenX, Yahoo’s (YHOO) Right Media and Microsoft’s (MSFT) AdECN.

That makes sense, because ad buyers who use Invite, like Publicis’s Vivaki, expect to be able to buy inventory from multiple exchanges.

But over time, Google does plan on investing in Invite and integrating it with DoubleClick for Advertisers, its ad-serving technology. Invite users wouldn’t be required to use DFA, but the two would be designed to match up seamlessly, sources said.

It will be interesting to see what becomes of Invite’s competitors, like MediaMath, Turn and X+1, in the wake of this deal. Venture capitalists have poured money into demand-side platforms in recent years, but I’ve heard increasing skepticism about valuations those investors are seeking. And now the most obvious buyer, with the deepest pockets, is off the table.

Turner and his co-founders started Invite Media when they were still undergraduates at the University of Pennsylvania; the company has offices in Philadelphia and New York City. Investors include Comcast’s (CMCSA) venture arm and First Round Capital.

Invite had previously considered selling to Omniture last summer, but that deal went away after Adobe (ADBE) purchased the analytics company.

Trying to Make Online Shopping More Fun

The new breed of e-commerce sites is benefiting by making shopping more personal and more like a game, the CEO of high-end retailer Gilt Groupe said Wednesday.

Susan Lyne, whose site offers designer brands to members at reduced prices, said that by offering a limited number of products for a small amount of time, Gilt has overcome one of the biggest difficulties for online retailers: getting people to move from putting an item in their cart to actually buying it. Gilt’s site has often been compared with real-world “sample sales,” where buyers often scramble to get a few designer dresses before someone else snaps it up.

“The quickest anyone has ever gotten from login through checkout is nine seconds,” she said.

Ms. Lyne was speaking at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, on a panel that also included Rob Kalin, the CEO of Etsy, an online marketplace for makers of hand-crafted items and the like. Both entrepreneurs believe they differentiate themselves from the Amazons (AMZN) of the world by giving people a more personalized experience.
